26 July 2007 Chancellor to offer tax relief to flood victims

Chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling is to offer tax relief to those suffering in the wake of heavy flooding in the south of England.

The official has announced that next year's government Finance Bill has been brought forward, which would allow the waiving of surcharges and interest to those who might not be able to pay their bills on time.

This may come as a welcome relief to those expecting to be stung by expensive home insurance bills in the future.

Jane Kennedy, financial secretary to the treasury and minister for HM Revenue and Customs, assured people that they will be given help.

"I want to ensure that people affected by the flooding do not have to worry about tax or their tax credit award at this difficult time," she said.

Prime minister Gordon Brown appointed Mr Darling as chancellor on June 28th 2007.
