26 July 2007 'More action needed' to curb young driver deaths
There is more work to be done if the death toll of young drivers on UK roads is to come down, it has been reported.According to Bucks Free Press, the government's transport committee has suggested a rise in the driving age to 18.
This would bring Britain in line with other European nations and may bring a reduction in car insurance costs.
It added that road fatalities are the biggest cause of death among people under 20, something Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership communications manager Dan Campsall has claimed could be curbed by the increased age restriction.
"Evidence strongly suggests that raising the age at which you can start driving would make the roads safer and save lives; crucially the lives of the young drivers and their passengers," he said.
Currently, a young person can take to the road and acquire a driving licence at age 17.
