25 July 2007 Oxford evacuations 'may lead to home insurance claims'

Some 250 homes in the Osney area of Oxford have been evacuated by emergency services due to rising water levels, it has been reported.

According to Thames Valley Police, those in the area who need shelter from the floods who have not found it so far should move to Oxford United's Kassam Stadium.

The constabulary commented that those people who are particularly vulnerable are being prioritised, while adding that there was no immediate risk to the sub-power station nearby on Ferry Hinksey Road.

But it may be that those without thorough home insurance policies are hit by the cost of replacing their household possessions.

This comes after claims made by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) that competitive flood insurance policies could only remain available if future housing developments are kept away from areas likely to be flooded.

"We need homes. But they must be built in the right place and to the right design," said Nick Starling of the ABI.
