25 July 2007 Drink-driving 'up a fifth in Scotland'

There has been a 20 per cent increase in the number of drivers caught over the legal alcohol limit, it has been claimed.

According to the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, 131 drivers were found to be inebriated behind the wheel during the first week of its annual summer safety campaign, the Herald has reported.

This is up on the 109 motorists caught in the same amount of time in 2006, it added.

And chief superintendent Mike McCormick commented that drivers may not be getting the message - something which can compromise a car or van insurance policy.

"Despite the high number of tests conducted, it is disheartening to see more drivers are showing positive or refusing to give a breath test," he said.

Across the UK, some 3,150 people were killed on the roads in 2006, compared to 3,201 in 2005.
