24 July 2007 Garden furniture 'needs home insurance protection too'

Home insurance policies which provide cover for garden furniture offer the best form of protection against thieves, an expert has said.

A recent survey by American Express of 10,000 customers found that the gardening industry is worth £100 million per week and some home insurance providers predict that one in seven garden items purchased will go missing.

Some 62 per cent of homeowners possess a set of table and chairs in their gardens, which represent an average value of £248.

Consumers are urged to check the small print of their home insurance policies to determine if their garden furniture, ornaments and equipment are only covered if they are protected by lock and key.

American Express Insurance Services marketing manager Joanne Field said that although "it is not practical for homeowners to lock away their garden furniture and equipment each night ... the best defence against thieves is a good insurance policy".

Halifax Home Insurance has this week warned that the number of accidents in the home increases by almost a quarter in the summer months.
