24 July 2007 ABI warning over floodplains

For flood insurance to remain widely available and competitively priced, new housing developments must be built away from flood-prone areas, an expert has claimed.

Association of British Insurers director of general insurance and health Nick Starling expressed the view in response to today's publication of the government's Housing Green Paper.

On presenting the paper to MPs, housing minister Yvette Cooper said there is a need to build more affordable homes across England in an effort to prevent the development of social inequality over the next 20 years.

"We need homes. But they must be built in the right place and to the right design," Mr Starling said.

Many people are likely suffer financially after the recent flooding across England, with some victims not possessing of a home insurance policy that included compensation for flood damage.

"We need a fresh approach to house building to take account of the increasing risk of flooding to ensure sustainable communities," Mr Starling said.

The recent flooding across the UK, which caused devastation in counties such as Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire, is expected to cost the insurance industry £2 billion in home insurance claims.
