23 July 2007 ABI issues flood update

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has issued a flood update insisting that home insurance firms are dealing with claims as quickly as they possibly can.

Following the devastating floods in Yorkshire last month tens of thousands of homeowners across south and central England are now facing lengthy clean-up operations after torrential downpours caused more flooding.

The ABI said home insurance companies will be contacting all of their customers in the post code areas that have been affected by the latest deluge and bringing in extra staff to deal with claims.

They will also arrange temporary accommodation for the families concerned and will be visiting the flood hit properties - as soon as it is safe to do so - to assess the damage.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance at the ABI, said: "Insurers already have emergency plans in place to deal with these floods, and will pull out all the stops to help policyholders."

According to Moneysupermarket.com the number of people applying for home insurance policies has tripled since the first of the flooding occurred in Sheffield, Leeds and Hull.
