20 July 2007 Van insurance customers 'may benefit from new police action'
Van insurance customers in Accrington could be set to benefit from new measures being introduced by police to crack down on vehicle crime.Mini CCTV cameras are to be placed in parked cars in crime hotspots as part of a sting operation to catch thieves who steal expensive tools from commercial vans.
Police in Accrington say there have been a high number of such thefts in the area over the past year and they plan to use the hi-tech gadgets to film criminals in action, the Blackburn Citizen reports.
Crime prevention officer PC Andy Liptrot told the newspaper: "Thefts such as these only take a matter of seconds to commit, but the cost to the member of public targeted can have devastating effects. One builder who recently lost all his power tools from his van lost his livelihood."
Police in Sussex and the Wirral have also reported an increase in theft from vans as thieves look to steal power tools and other valuable items.
Having full van insurance cover in place can help builders and other van drivers to protect against theft of their vehicle's contents.
