Say yes to cheaper van, home and car insurance

Brits are being urged to check their home insurance policies carefully to make absolutely sure they provide all the necessary cover.

According to the financial product research business Defaqto, many homeowners automatically opt for cheaper home insurance policies without realising that the cover they provide is inadequate for their needs.

For example, families living in flood prone areas need to avoid opting for the cheapest quite they can find and ensure that their home insurance protects them against flood damage.

Brian Brown, head of insight at Defaqto, said homeowners should use price comparison websites to check whether the products they are interested in offer the cover levels they need.

"I cannot stress strongly enough that price is only one of the factors to be taken into account when buying insurance products," he said.

"If the [recent] floods have taught us anything it is that the quality of the cover is going to be paramount in these emergency situations."

According to Moneysupermarket.com, the number of people applying for home insurance has tripled in some parts of the UK following weeks of torrential rain and flooding.
