18 July 2007 Home insurance customers 'living in fear'

New reports suggest that many home insurance customers in the UK are living in fear of intruders and do not feel safe in their homes.

Nearly half of all homeowners surveyed by Cornhill Direct said that they have installed security lights to help allay these fears while almost a quarter have timer switched on their lights.

A total of 11 per cent have a guard dog and eight per cent have gone to the extent of installing CCTV.

Meanwhile figures from the Home Office show a decline in reported burglaries, suggesting that preventative measures are having a positive impact.

"The figures speak for themselves in that people can substantially reduce the risk of burglary by improving their home security," said David Keel of Cornhill Direct.

"We believe that people can help reduce their fear of being a victim of crime by improving the level of security in and around their homes."

Recent flooding has prompted a 300 per cent increase in home insurance applications, according to moneysupermarket.com.
