17 July 2007 Dundee 'friendliest for cars'

The town of Dundee has the friendliest environment for drivers, according to a recent study by Virgin Money Car Insurance.

Cheap petrol and swathes of parking places exist in Dundee, along with low car crime rates, the research found.

Behind Dundee in the rankings for most care friendly are Aberdeen, Telford, Ipswich, Dudley and Norwich.

Cardiff was rated as the worst place for drivers, with high rates of car crime and a dearth of parking lots.

The east midlands city of Nottingham was ranked as the second-worst city for drivers, followed by London, Leeds and Slough, in Berkshire.

Jason Wyer-Smith, of Virgin Money Car Insurance, said: "With more than 23 million UK drivers, it's clear that we are in love with the car and spend a considerable amount of time in them.

"Unfortunately, time spent driving is not always the most pleasant and our research shows the driving experience varies widely across the country."

Meanwhile, police in Gwent have started to use cars with hidden cameras to catch satnav thieves.
