17 July 2007 Brits 'dependent on cars'

Britons are more dependent on their vehicles today than they were ten years ago, according to a new report, news that may interest to car insurance customers.

Up to half of the population refuse to use buses as they have no reason to regard them as an "attractive' option, the research from the RAC found.

Almost 75 per cent of the population of Britain has a driving license, contrasted to two-thirds a decade ago.

Elizabeth Dainton, research development manager at the RAC Foundation, commented: "Trying and experiencing new things is part and parcel of our everyday lives, but where transport is concerned we tend to stick with what we know."

Public transport must step up and provide more efficient means of travel if Britons are to be weaned off their cars in the next 12 years, she added.

The total mileage that Britons drive on average has risen by 17 per cent and the number of men behind the wheel has risen from 75 per cent to 80 per cent, the survey showed.

In related news, Virgin Money Car Insurance has carried out a survey which has concluded that Cardiff is the worst city for drivers, due to high rates of car crime and lack of parking.
