16 July 2007 Cowboys 'costing Brits billions'
Cowboy builders are botching jobs and leaving Britons with a hefty bill that might not even be covered in their home insurance policy, it has been revealed.Figures from high street bank Abbey showed that half-baked builders cost £3.9 billion a year, with customers forced to pay up for the damage.
And the bank warned that home insurance policies often do not cover factors such as poor materials, shoddy workmanship and dodgy design.
Prasad Shastri, head of insurance marketing at Abbey, commented: "The potential damage that could be caused by rogue tradesmen is staggering and we are encouraging anyone looking to hire a contractor to work on their home to ensure that they have a reputable background."
He added that homeowners trying to save a quick buck with cheaper labour could end up paying over the odds in the long run.
The Trading Standards Institute recently warned that cowboy builders may see the recent flooding as a window of opportunity for nefarious action and urged affected homeowners to be vigilant.
