12 July 2007 White cars 'are the safest vehicles'

People who drive white vehicles are statistically less likely to have an accident, according to new figures.

Research by the Monash University Accident Research Centre in Australia found that drivers of white vehicles were 12 per cent less likely to have a crash than people in black cars.

White vehicles were also found to be safer than cars painted blue, silver, green, red and grey.

Commenting on the findings, Edmund King of the RAC Foundation said: "White van man has got something right as white-coloured vehicles had the lowest crash risk in all types of light conditions."

However, the colour of a car was found to have less of an impact outside of daylight hours, as the use of headlights at night reduced its effect.

Mr King recommended that drivers consider the effect the colour of their vehicle has on its visibility to other motorists.

According to recent research from Cornhill Direct, 93 per cent of motorists believe that drivers of white vans are considerate and able, attributing their poor reputation to a rogue minority.
