12 July 2007 Male motorists 'feel like part of their vehicle'

Male motorists often drive with one hand because they feel like part of the vehicle, according to a new study.

Research by the University of East London found that men tended to be physically relaxed while driving and felt attached to their cars, hence many keeping only one hand on the wheel.

By contrast, women were found to often see a car as a separate entity, therefore making them grip the steering wheel with two hands.

Dr Iain MacRury, co-author of the study, told the Daily Mail: "Men talk about their cars as if talking about themselves.
"Women are more comfortable expressing their feelings directly and see the car as separate."

He added that this was one reason why women drivers often tended to christen their vehicles with a name.

The research also identified other indications that women did not see cars as an extension of themselves, such as affectionately patting the steering wheel, roof or dashboard.

According to research by Privilege, young children feel safer in a car being driven by a man than by a female motorist.
