11 July 2007 Drivers 'want smoking banned in cars'
Most drivers want new smoking restrictions to apply to private vehicles, according to new research.A study by Motorpoint found that 62 per cent of respondents did not think the ban went far enough and wanted legislation extended to ban smoking in cars that are privately owned, reports Easier.
The law, which was introduced in England at the start of this month, currently only restricts people from driving in company-owned vehicles.
Commenting on the findings, Motorpoint's managing director David Shelton acknowledged the divide among consumers regarding the law, but said there was "a real concern" about the potential risks to the health of car passengers.
He continued: "Whilst we have to comply with existing legislation, it is still the retailer's responsibility to educate buyers on the dangers associated with smoking."
The smoking restrictions in England follow similar moves in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Under the new legislation, smokers are not allowed to light up in any enclosed public space.
