11 July 2007 New cars 'should have alcohol locks'

Special alcohol locks that prevent drink-drivers from entering their vehicle should be issued as standard, according to a motoring group.

GEM Motoring Assist suggested that all new cars should be fitted with the devices in order to stop people driving while intoxicated.

David Williams, chief executive of the organisation, commented: "There are certain groups of hardcore drinkers who seem to believe they are above the law and continue to drink and drive."

He added that although young male drivers were a particular problem group, mature and middle-aged drivers also regularly flouted the law.

Furthermore, he highlighted an increasing number of female drink-drivers in the UK.

Mr Williams also suggested that people who have been prosecuted for drink-driving should have alcohol locks retro-fitted to their vehicles before they are allowed to go on the roads again.

According to government figures, an average of 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured each year in drink-drive collisions.

Meanwhile, almost one in six deaths on the road were found to involve drivers who were over the legal alcohol limit.
