09 July 2007 Overseas driving convictions 'can affect car insurance'
People who have been convicted of motoring offences abroad could face bigger car insurance premiums at home, according to experts.Legal expense insurance firm DAS stated that European countries are increasingly sharing details concerning motorists, meaning that different nations will be aware of any misdemeanours or criminal acts.
Rhian Gait-Parker, advice services manager at the firm, commented: "If convicted abroad, new laws allow greater exchange of motorists' details across Europe that could affect driving licences in the UK."
He added that if drivers are faced with prosecution abroad, it would be advisable to have legal expenses insurance, especially if they want to testify in their own language in a foreign court.
This follows research from uSwitch.com showing that many Britons are breaking the law when driving in another country.
The study showed that 2.8 million Brits break the speed limits away from home.
In addition, one million do not wear their seatbelts and use handheld mobile phones behind the wheel.
