09 July 2007 Young motorists warned about rural roads

People aged under 25 are the most likely group to have a road accident in a rural area, according to a new study.

Research by Roadsafe and Autoglass found that one in three young drivers admitted to driving round bends at high speed, while two-thirds said they had broken the speed limit.

In addition, only one in three young motorists were found to be aware that the risks were higher on rural roads, even though the majority of road deaths happen away from urban areas.

Nigel Doggett, managing director of Autoglass, commented: "Less traffic on rural roads compared with urban roads and motorways often leads people to think that they are safer to drive on.

"But rural roads have their own very unique hazards."

He added that a driver's reaction time is "significantly" shortened if they are driving at speed and dealing with rural hazards as well, making them a serious risk both to themselves and other road users.

Last week, the British Insurance Brokers' Association suggested that young drivers should opt for smaller cars, as it would save on their car insurance and cause less damage in a road accident.
