06 July 2007 Summer drink-drivers 'nearly double' Christmas numbers
A recent investigation into drink-driving has found that close to double the number of incidents occur over the summer than at Christmas, it has been reported.According to Which?, a recent police blitz found eight per cent of motorists stopped to be over the limit compared to four per cent over the Christmas period.
The figures come from a Europe-wide operation from TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network, in which the UK ranked third-highest for drink-driving.
While Germany and Slovenia had a worse record, Britain's positioning may affect the cost of car insurance policies for drivers nationwide.
"Thousands of people die on the roads each year as a result of drink-driving and hundreds of thousands are injured … this is needless suffering," said TISPOL president Eddy Greif.
Indeed, figures from the Department for Transport show that 3,150 people were killed on UK roads during 2006.
