05 July 2007 Police issue drivers valuables warning

Drivers have been told by police not to leave valuables in their cars at any time.

Northamptonshire Police have spoken out after a spate of thefts in Wellingborough over the past fortnight.

It claimed that seven satellite navigation systems and six mobile phones were taken from cars in the area and should serve as a warning to motorists acting particularly lax towards vehicle security.

This may also be something car insurance customers take notice of, as a break-in could compromise their no-claims policy.

And PC Nicola Hill claimed that such problems are avoidable if motorists employ preventative measures.

"All property should be removed from vehicles and should not be hidden in the boot, in the glove box or under the seat, as offenders will always look there," she said.

Figures from the Home Office show that vehicle crime has dropped by 51 per cent over the last ten years.
