05 July 2007 Police 'run into wrong-way drivers'

Police in Headington have cracked down on motorists driving the wrong way down a one-way road, it has been reported.

According to the Oxford Mail, twelve people were caught heading through Stile Road in the wrong direction during a ten-hour initiative.

The operation came into effect after complaints from local residents concerned about the spate of wrong-way driving.

In addition, two arrests were made along with 69 tickets issued to motorists on their phone, not wearing seatbelts and not in possession of a valid MOT - all offences which could compromise a car insurance policy.

PC Chris Miles, neighbourhood officer in the region, outlined the focus of the blitz.

"The whole purpose of this operation was to improve road safety in Headington," he said.

Headington is a district centre of Oxford, lying on top of Headington Hill.

It has been a hotspot for famous writers over the years, with CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien living there at various stages in their lives.
