Young drivers 'should consider smaller cars'

A top insurance body has commented that young drivers looking to reduce their motor insurance policy should opt for smaller cars.

Not only will a smaller, slower car do less damage if involved in a road accident, it can also be cost-effective, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA).

The organisation added that being in possession of a full driving licence for more than a year would also be of benefit to young drivers when taking out car insurance, although an accompanying no-claims bonus can only be of benefit if it is in the drivers name and not their parents.

"Once you've passed your test and you've been driving for a year on a full licence then you should notice that your insurance is getting cheaper because of that," said Graeme Trudgill, technical services manager at BIBA.

It is currently legal for people in the UK to drive from the age of 17.
