03 July 2007 Dogs 'having their day in China'
More people living in Beijing are picking up lodgers of the four-legged canine variety, it has been reported.According to the China Daily, the Beijing municipal public security bureau has reported that 50,000 pet dogs have been registered as living in the city during the first six months of the year.
It added that this takes the total number of dogs registered in the city to 659,000 - a figure which may have an effect an pet insurance prices in the area.
And Zhao Xu of the Beijing Association of Small Animal Protection, has suggested that this is down to social changes in Beijing.
"The city has witnessed increases in the number of pet dogs over the past few years. It is a natural outcome as people's standard of living keeps improving," he said
