02 July 2007 New road signs 'to curb Bournemouth speeding'
Electronic speed signs have been erected in Bournemouth as part of the region's efforts to improve road safety, it has been reported.According to the Dorset Daily Echo, the £5,000 device on Poole Lane tells motorists to slow down if they are over or approaching the speed limit.
Now Bournemouth Borough Council is looking to install the equipment in Heron Court Road, close to the Maxwell Road junction, due to a high number of accidents in the area.
This new measure may help drivers save on their car insurance policy, if it helps them avoid an accident.
"The council feels vehicle activated signs are more effective than speed indicator devices which can be seen as a challenge rather than a deterrent to boy racers," said Geoff Turnbull, engineering services manager at the body.
Department for Transport figures show that 3,150 people were killed on UK roads during 2006.
