29 June 2007 Drivers with dementia 'can still be safe'

Those who are suffering from dementia in its early stages can still be entirely competent when on the road, it has been claimed.

The BBC reports that a study from the British Medical Journal has stated that people with the disease can still act to an acceptable standard behind the wheel.

But DVLA regulation outlines that those who have developed the condition should let the authority know immediately.

"It is essential that people with dementia undergo regular reviews to ensure their safety is balanced with their mobility," said Clive Evers of the Alzheimer's Society.

It may also be that dementia sufferers see an increased car insurance premium in the wake of this admission.

Dementia is a condition that occurs due to the progressive decline of cognitive functions.

It can affect memory, attention, problem solving skills and language ability.

Similarly, depression and psychosis can be triggered by it.
