28 June 2007 Dyfed Powys crackdown brings 53 driver arrests
Police in Wales arrested 53 rogue drivers and impounded 48 vehicles in an illegal driving crackdown, it has been reported.According to the Shropshire Star, authorities ran the two-week initiative against rogue motorists in the region and took action against 17 drivers who were found to be under the influence of alcohol.
It added that a further 70 people had their automobiles seized for driving without car insurance or a valid licence.
And chief inspector Phil Davies claimed that, by working in conjunction with other authorities in the area, a real impact on road safety can be made.
"[We can get the message] across to the small element of drivers who would contemplate using the road network in an illegal manner to think twice before drink-driving or driving without a licence," he said.
Figures from the Department for Transport show that 3,150 people died on UK roads during 2006.
