Police in Wales arrested 53 rogue drivers and impounded 48 vehicles in an illegal driving crackdown, it has been reported.

According to the Shropshire Star, authorities ran the two-week initiative against rogue motorists in the region and took action against 17 drivers who were found to be under the influence of alcohol.

It added that a further 70 people had their automobiles seized for driving without car insurance or a valid licence.

And chief inspector Phil Davies claimed that, by working in conjunction with other authorities in the area, a real impact on road safety can be made.

"[We can get the message] across to the small element of drivers who would contemplate using the road network in an illegal manner to think twice before drink-driving or driving without a licence," he said.

Figures from the Department for Transport show that 3,150 people died on UK roads during 2006.
