28 June 2007 Drivers in Suffolk 'disregarding mobile laws'

The number of people using their mobile phones behind the wheel in Suffolk has not decreased, according to a news source in the area.

Each day, ten people are caught making calls or sending text messages despite new regulation brought in earlier this year.

Motorists in the region have failed to curb the activity even though Department for Transport legislation brought in on February 27th 2007 mean they can now be fined £60 and given three licence points.

The illegal act may also carry a risk to car insurance policies, as a conviction could see people struggle to find a cheap deal in the future.

And Inspector Martin Barnes-Smith, chief inspector for road policing in Suffolk, is frustrated by the lack of action from motorists.

"Drivers are still ignoring the message and flouting the law - I can't understand why they are not taking on board the message that using mobile phones can be dangerous."
