28 June 2007 Homeowners should update insurance, says expert

People who may be affected by the severe flooding in the UK should look to update their home insurance policies, it has been suggested.

According to Insurancewide.com, people may be reluctant to leave their property after the heavy rainfall in parts of the UK, which has left four people dead.

But a revised and updated home insurance policy may give residents in such areas improved cover and piece of mind, according to James Harrison, chief executive of the company.

"Buildings insurance will cover the damage to the structure of your property and home contents insurance will cover your possessions," he said.

Homes may also be at risk when the public smoking ban comes into effect on July 1st 2007.

Malcolm Tarling, speaking for the Association of British Insurers, commented that the likelihood of a house fire is increased by 35 per cent if someone who lives there smokes.
