26 June 2007 Drivers 'paying out more in fines'
People in the UK shelled out more in speeding fines last year, despite the fact that the number of convictions was down, it has been claimed.During the 2005 to 2006 financial year, some £144.6 million in notices was paid by people caught on camera over the speed limit - an act that can compromise a car insurance policy.
This shows an increase of one per cent above the level recorded in 2004 to 2005, even though "fewer tickets" were issued.
And speed camera expert Stephen Mesquita has commented that even though the decrease is a step in the right direction, drivers may still be paying too much.
"Don't be fooled by the good news. There may have been fewer tickets issued and fewer £60 fixed penalty notices sent out, but the Safety Camera Partnerships still got more money out of motorists in 2005 to 2006," he said.
According to the Gazette & Herald, drivers in Wiltshire are the fourth worst when it comes to getting caught on camera.
