26 June 2007 Motorists 'less speedy in Scotland'

Scottish motorists are getting the message over speeding, it has been reported.

Statistics from the publishers of the Phillips Road Atlas show that the amount of £60 fines and penalty point deductions went down by 21 per cent in 2005 to 2006, the BBC stated.

This makes Scotland the most improved area of the UK, as England and Wales posted three per cent drops, it added.

But people in the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland may be concerned to know that their car insurance policy may be more at risk - the highest amount of notices were issued in the region.

"In the case of Dumfries and Galloway, it has a very low population and some very busy roads with people whizzing through so I think it's a bit of an anomaly," commented Stephen Mesquita on the BBC's Good Morning Scotland.

Across the UK, 3,150 people were killed on the road in 2006, according to Department for Transport figures.
