25 June 2007 Millions 'driving in the dark' abroad

Britons are unaware of the car insurance available to them when they use their vehicles abroad, it has been reported.

According to research from uSwitch.com, two out of three motorists do not know that some insurers only offer third party cover when they drive overseas.

This information may be too late for some, as the company has claimed that 2.8 million Brits break the speed limits away from home.

Similarly, one million do not wear their seatbelts and use handheld mobile phones behind the wheel, it added.

"This is a major issue for holiday makers as they can end up facing an unpaid claim if they drive their car abroad without getting their insurance lined up properly beforehand," said Aron Thompson, head of insurance at uSwitch.com.

Advice like this may come in handy for those looking to go abroad this summer.

The season began for many on Thursday June 21st 2007 - the summer solstice.
