Over 26 million people are choosing to protect their holiday using Air Travel Organisers' Licensing, according to new statistics.

In addition to travel insurance, those looking to go on holiday can be protected by ATOL against the event of their provider going out of business at any stage during the planning process or the holiday itself.

Figures from ATOL Business show that the average travel package price now stands at £551 - a 7.2 per cent increase from the year up to September 2006.

This can be attributed to changes in the industry, commented David Moseli, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Authority's consumer protection group.

"The figures reflect a range of capacity changes by tour operators in response to the market, as well as some business consolidation and capacity transfers," he said.

Summer - the busiest period for holidays - officially began for some yesterday with the summer solstice.
