22 June 2007 Increase in car size 'behind some crashes'
The cause behind vehicle collisions today may be the increased size of the modern car, it has been reported.According to Easier, research from Accident Exchange say that the 66,000 motorists who hit another vehicle negotiating a parking space may be doing so because they find it difficult to judge dimensions.
The increasing width and length of the modern car is to blame for this, it added, while it may explain some car insurance claims.
For example, today's most popular car is the Ford Focus, which measures 23cm wider than and 16cm taller than its predecessor, the Escort.
But Steve Evans of the company stated that this is more of a road safety measure.
"The front end of the vehicle is considerably rounder than ten to15 years ago, and the bonnet drops away more sharply to reduce injury in the event of an accident," he said.
Last year, 3,150 people were killed on the road in the UK.
