21 June 2007 Road tax band figures 'show emissions awareness'

The increase in the number of motorists registered for lower road tax bands represents a move towards more environmentally-friendly driving, it has been claimed.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that 60.7 per cent of new cars sold in the last 12 months fall into bands A to D - vehicles emitting less than 165g per kilometre.

By contrast, this stood as 43.1 per cent in 2000, which is down to environmental concerns as well as advances in motor technology, commented a company authority.

"There has been a noticeable shift in the new car market," said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive.

"This is partly due to concerns about motoring costs and partly because reducing their climate change impact is important to more buyers."

Meanwhile, people who choose to take out green car insurance may benefit from discounted prices.
