20 June 2007 Employers 'ignoring drivers' health'
A large portion of companies are not considering the health of drivers they employ, it has been reported. While Manpower Driving has stated that a survey of 1,800 employers found 64 per cent to be keen to encourage health issues for their motorists in the wake of the smoking ban, 36 per cent will not, according to Road Transport.
Furthermore, it found that 69 per cent are not providing help when it comes to giving up smoking.
This could be of consequence to company van insurance policies, as well as health plans.
However, 51 per cent of transport organisations are offering free or discounted gym memberships, fruit and diet counselling.
"Many employers in the transport sector recognise the benefits of a healthy workforce as it has a clear impact on their business in areas including productivity, motivation, absence management and staff retention," said Stuart Edwards, head of Manpower Driving.
The national ban on public smoking comes into effect on July 1st 2007.
