20 June 2007 Pope issues motoring commandments

Motorists have been told how they should behave on the road, by none other than the Pope.

A report from the Vatican entitled Guidelines for Pastoral Care of the Road has told drivers not to make rude gestures on the road, to respect pedestrians' rights and to cross themselves before they start their journey, according to the Times.

Similarly, it added that motorists have been issued instructions from the religious leader not to "arouse envy" through the car they drive - which may be a difficult task in the homeland of the Ferrari, as might paying the car insurance on such a vehicle.

The document also tells drivers that they have a responsibility to other road users and that they must support the victims of any accidents they are involved in.

Back in the UK, 3,150 people were killed in traffic collisions in 2006, according to figures from the Department for Transport.
