19 June 2007 Drivers emitting CO2 'through getting lost'

Motorists in the UK are emitting a substantial amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each time they get lost, it has been claimed.

New research from satellite navigation company Becker has found that a total of 105,000 extra tonnes of the harmful gases are released when a driver loses his or her way each year, according to Life Style Extra.

The hapless navigators pick up 325 million wasted miles each year getting lost, a potentially dangerous scenario which could also risk a car insurance policy if a motorist is unfamiliar with the area.

According to Sue Welland, the founder of environmental pressure group The CarbonNeutral Company, these findings are of real concern and are representative of the true picture of Britain's green problems.

"In the UK alone, 25 per cent of the carbon footprint is a result of road traffic," she said.

People looking to make savings on their car insurance may find that choosing to use the vehicle less for smaller tasks could save petrol money and the environment as well as the risk of a crash.
