19 June 2007 Pets 'should buckle-up in cars'

Pets should be given seatbelt-like harnesses in order to ensure they do not do themselves or others serious damage in the event of a crash, it has been claimed.

According to Which?, the PDSA has claimed an unrestrained border collie dog weighing 50kg would jolt forward with the force of a polar bear.

Such an occurrence could have serious implications for those with car insurance policies or pet insurance cover.

And Steve Leonard, whose work as a PDSA veterinary surgeon has led to a career in television, stated that protecting pets is a simple and worthwhile process.

"'Cars are an alien environment to pets, but by being patient and taking a few simple precautions, you can ensure that a car journey with your pet is safe and enjoyable for all," he said.

Mr Leonard has made appearances on Vets in Practice and the Way we went Wild.
