18 June 2007 Drivers facing bills for residential parking

Motorists in the UK driving larger vehicles could be asked to pay for the privilege of parking outside their own homes, it has been reported.

According to the Daily Mail, authorities in London are looking to introduce charges for those behind the wheel of gas-guzzling vehicles in an effort to lower carbon emissions.

From next month, people in Hackney with car engines that exceed four litres will pay £207.50 a year to keep their car outside their home, it added.

While some may see the move as an unwanted addition to costs such as car insurance and road tax, Nick Lester, director of transport, environment and planning for London Council, believes it will help the environment.

"There is clear evidence that it will have a significant impact on air quality and climate change," he said.

Meanwhile, the same news source has reported that BHP Billiton will invest £153 million into the support of emissions technology over the next five years.
