15 June 2007 Lancashire 'one of UKs worst for drink-driving'

New statistics have pointed to Lancashire as being one of the country's worst areas for drink-driving, it has been reported.

According to the Lancashire Evening Post, in excess of 10,000 motorists were caught over the legal alcohol limit in the region between 2001 and 2004.

Against the rest of the country, the county ranked in the top ten for the crime, the figure having gone up by 400 in the three since it was first recorded, it added.

Statistics like this may result in residents of the area having difficulty when it comes to renewing their car insurance policies, although one policeman is committed to bringing figures down.

"Lancashire Constabulary is committed to reducing road casualties and one way we do this without alienating the law abiding public is vigorously targeting those offences we know cause casualties," said chief inspector John Donnelly of the region's road policing unit.

Department for Transport figures show that 3,150 people died on UK roads in 2006.
