15 June 2007 Drink drive limit 'may be cut'

Ministers are considering cutting the drink drive limit to the equivalent of one drink, it has been reported.

According to the Daily Mail, road safety official Stephen Ladyman has revealed that consultation on the matter will take place later this year.

The newspaper claimed that this comes as statistics show that the number of drink-related road deaths has increased from 460 in 1999 to 560 in 2005.

And officials would like to bring legislation in line with most countries in the EU - 50mg per 100ml of blood - an amount that has seen fatalities drop in Germany and the Netherlands, it added, while it may also affect car insurance policies.

"The UK already has stringent penalties for drink driving, and better enforcement than many countries, but that doesn't mean we can't do better," said a Department for Transport spokeswomen.

Meanwhile, Clickdocs has reported that the current alcohol limit is to be applied to sailors.

Those navigating a vessel over seven metres long can face prosecution if they are under the influence.
