13 June 2007 Car crash leads to fresh phone calls

The death of a council worker in a car crash has led to fresh calls over the use of mobile phones behind the wheel, it has been reported.

According to News Shopper, Bexley Council's corporate project officer for chief executive office Ian Cumming was on his mobile as well as over the legal alcohol limit when he collided with a roundabout.

Mr Cumming, a 36 year-old from Parsonage Manorway in Belvedere was found dead at the scene, it added.

And accident investigation officer PC Marin Ostler confirmed that he was on a hands-free set while he was driving which, while not illegal, could still be a distracting activity.

Driving while on a mobile phone can risk lives as well as a car insurance policy.

On February 27th 2007, the action taken against motorists found to be in violation of laws against the act went up to a £60 fine and a three-point licence deduction.
