13 June 2007 Survey reveals 'environment not a priority to drivers'

A new survey has found that the environment is not a top priority for most drivers.

The whatcar.com study has showed that one in ten motorists ranks green issues highly in terms of importance, with price and equipment levels higher on the agenda.

Furthermore, the image a vehicle has is twice as important as environmental matters, with 20.7 per cent of people choosing it ahead of the latter's 9.6 per cent.

It added that this comes despite latest government figures which show that personal car journeys make up over ten per cent of Britain's combined carbon emissions.

In an effort to reduce the harm, a number of car insurance companies now offer special privileges to green customers

Meanwhile, the World Development Movement has estimated that the UK produces 564 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, with the south-east the largest regional culprit - emitting 61 million tonnes.
