13 June 2007 Driver details 'wrong 18% of the time'
The details being held by the Drivers Vehicle Licencing Agency are wrong in close to one in five cases, it has been claimed.According to Conservative shadow transport secretary Chris Grayling MP, the organisation's database has incorrect details for around 7.8 million.
This works out at more than 18 per cent of the people driving on Britain's roads.
And the official commented that the figure could encourage those driving without car insurance or tax to continue doing so.
"This is a startling figure which has worrying consequences for the safety of people on Britain's roads," he said.
"It also makes it much easier for the rogue drivers to keep on driving."
A recent report from the Association of British Insurers has found that those who do cheat on their insurance premiums cost the industry around £4 million each day - an annual cost of £1.6 billion.
