11 June 2007 'Psychometric' tests should taken by drivers
A government safety adviser has recommended that motorists take a psychometric examination before being allowed behind the wheel of a car, it has been reported.Robert Gifford, who works as executive director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety has told Radio Five that such a system may filter out drivers who consistently break road rules - also compromising car insurance policies for themselves and other people.
Mr Gifford commented that the test would come in addition to the current series of assessments - practical, theoretical and hazard awareness.
"What one would want to do is - in addition to the multiple choice questions that are in the theory test at the moment - we would give people a series of value judgments," he said.
It may also be that such a measure helps bring down the number of road deaths in the UK.
Last year, the Department for Transport estimated that 3,150 people died in traffic collisions.
