07 June 2007 Tourists car crime targeted in police project

Cheddar police have launched a new project over the summer in an attempt to crack down on car theft, it has been reported.

The Weston Mercury has stated that Operation Grand Canyon will see the constabulary look to reduce criminal activity near a local gorge by increasing police visibility in the area.

Whenever officers have a spare moment, commented Sergeant Peter Yensen, some will be patrolling the gorge, the paper added.

The officer stated that people visiting the region should enjoy their holiday, but remember to stay alert.

"Tourists visiting the area feel more relaxed on holiday and don't think to lock their valuables up … which is an open invite for an opportunist thief," he said.

Meanwhile, an Auto Trader report recently found that most motorists prefer to take their car to a private repair company in the wake of an accident than claim on their car insurance policy.
