05 June 2007 Tougher penalties unveiled in Northern Ireland
New laws to target dangerous driving in Northern Ireland have been unveiled, it has been reported.According to the BBC, people who drive while using their mobile phone from June 27th 2007 can be liable to a three-point licence point deduction and a maximum fine of £1,000.
Similarly, those who hit the road without wearing a seatbelt can also be punished under laws announced by the environment minister Arlene Foster.
And if drivers have children with them, they must ensure they are strapped in if they are to avoid the sanctions - which may also have an effect on car insurance costs.
"These new penalties will send out a clear message to road users that I intend [to clamp] down on irresponsible drivers who think they can ignore the law and put lives at risk," Ms Foster said.
This marks the second time such driving regulations have been changed this year - following a similar hike in punishments in February.
