01 June 2007 Physical conditioning 'may improve driving in older people'
New research has linked improved physical conditioning to better driving skills, it has been reported.Research at Yale School of Medicine developed a programme of exercise which, it has been stated, increases coordination, speed of movement and flexibility.
It added that the intervention bumped up participants' road test scores after three months.
The study, which involved 178 drivers over 70 years of age in and around the Greater New Haven area of the US, may possibly lead to lower car insurance rates for the elderly if people take it on board.
"We found that this was a safe, well-tolerated intervention that maintained driving performance," said project leader and internal medicine associate Professor Richard Marottoli.
Meanwhile, recent research from Experian found that brand trust and reputation were of higher importance to younger people buying a used car than they were to older drivers.
