31 May 2007 Police 'should get power to breathalyse at random'

Police officers should be given the power to breathalyse people at random, it has been claimed.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) has pointed to the recent upturn in the amount of young drivers being caught on the road over the legal alcohol limit as justification for this, according to Pocket-lint.co.uk.

A spokesman for the group added that studies have shown that a crackdown on drink-driving, as well as a lower limit that 80mg, could save lives.

Such a change may also see people save when it comes to taking out a car insurance policy.

"Between 50mg and 80mg you are between two and two-and-a-half times more likely to crash and six times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident," said Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at Rospa.

However, statistics from the Department for Transport show that deaths on the road are declining.

In 2006, 3,150 people were killed in a traffic collision, compared to 3,201 in 2005.
